Christmas In Malaysia
Christmas in Malaysia is celebrated as anywhere else in the world. The celebration of the birth of Jesus is the time for hope and rejoicing, of love, giving and forgiving. Christmas in Malaysia is the time for family and friends gathering.
However Christmas in Malaysia does not completely comply with that of Christmas as celebrated in Europe. The temperature of Malaysia ranges from 22 to 33 degree centigrade. Malaysian Christmas is more of a universal celebration with a more secular aspect to it rather than of any religious significance. The image of Santa Claus is very appealing to the kids here is in anywhere in the world. The retailers and shopkeepers seize the opportunity to put up non-religious motifs like snow, stockings, Santa as well as his reindeer. There are also candy canes and the all familiar Christmas tree. One can come across white, green red and also gold which are considered as traditional colors of the season. The capital city of Kuala Lumpur as well as the greater Klang Valley becomes active during Yuletide with colorful lights and decorations at homes and business establishments, giving a festive kind of ambiance. All the shopping malls and hotels decorated themselves in sync with the Christmas mood.
Christmas in Malaysia is a public holiday and is still a religious holiday. The Christian community here making up to 7 % of the population, observes the Advent which is a four week period observed before Christmas. The time during this time for the Christians is for prayers, Bible reading and fasting of some.
Some churches, especially the catholic ones use wreaths to mark the weeks during the season of Advent. As the day approaches, people start decorating their homes, usually with artificial objects. People deliver greeting cards and gifts are placed under trees. Festive songs are played everywhere. Some choir groups and church communities make rounds, visiting orphanages, hospital wards and old folk's homes.
Christmas in Malaysia also refer to the church gatherings comprising of people of different beliefs to observe the festive spirit. The celebration and the festivity continue till the morning hour.
